Purdue University students combine course work at the University of
Pretoria, South Africa, with visits to regular and special education
schools, excursions to cultural attractions and an animal park, and a
3-day trip to Kruger game reserve. This 4-week program takes place
during the 3rd module of summer classes.
The
program allows undergraduates to meet all requirements of the Block II
Teacher Education Program (i.e., EDPS 235, EDPS 265, Theory into
Practice practicum). Content includes learning, development,
motivation, assessment, and special needs. This involves 6 credits.
Students
not in the Teacher Education program may study either regular learning
and development (EDPS 235, 3 credit hours) or atypical learning and
development (EDPS 265, 3 credit hours), or both.
For
Graduate Students, an Independent Research course (EDPS 590) is
available.
Students
also complete a 1-credit-hour course in Historical, Cultural,
Political, and Current Issues in South Africa (EDPS 590F). This
comprises visits to
cultural sites, such as the Apartheid museum, Soweto, and the
Voortrekker monument, and a short seminar series. This course may be
applied towards the minor in Global Studies.
