Welcome to Counseling & Development

At Purdue University, the Department of Educational Studies organizes its degree programs into areas. The Counseling & Development area includes the Counseling Psychology (CPSY) and the School Counseling (SC) degree programs.

These programs are similar in several respects, including
   (a) using a scientist-practitioner training model,
   (b) teaching professionals to deliver counseling services,
   (c) emphasizing ethical practice,
   (d) being linked to a strong professional organization, and
   (e) being accountable to the public through accreditation.

The programs also differ in several ways. For instance, the CPSY program, which is accredited by the American Psychological Association, offers a doctoral degree, has research as a priority, and requires a dissertation. In contrast, the School Counseling program, which is accredited by CACREP (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs), offers a master's degree, prioritizes P-12 school-related practice, has an international dimension, and employs SC students in funded supplementary services in area schools.
