Course Description
This course introduces students to the basic principles of learning, development, and motivation. The course emphasizes a conceptual understanding of how theories of learning, development, and motivation can be used by classroom teachers. The course also examines issues of diversity, student assessment, and the role of technology, in promoting classroom learning and motivation.
Rationale
Teaching is a complex activity that requires the integration of many sources of knowledge. One of these sources is the knowledge of how students learn. Successful teaching is predicated on an understanding of how students learn. In this course, students will explore major theories of learning and motivation and how these theories may be applied by teachers to enhance classroom learning.
Objectives
Upon completing this course students will be able to:
Understand the specific concepts and principles fundamental to different theories of learning, development, motivation.
Understand how theories of learning and motivation apply to diverse learners.
Understand how theories of learning, development, and motivation guide instructional practices in the classroom.
Understand the role of formal and informal assessment in fostering learning and motivation.
Understand the role of technology in fostering learning and motivation.
Reflect upon and refine their personal philosophy of teaching and learning based on the material covered in this course
