Institutional and Program Accreditation

Purdue University is an accredited member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The C&D graduate program in School Counseling was approved in 2004 by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) . In 2004 the Indiana Department of Education approved the program leading to Standard and Professional certification as School Counselors (K-12).

Initial accreditation of the School Counseling Program by CACREP was achieved in 1986; second-cycle accreditation was completed in 1995, and third in 2001. The following is the current status of the program:

M.S. Degree Programs Status Period ending
School Counseling Accredited June 30, 2009

At present, the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) registers professional counselors as National Certified Counselors (NCC) after review of educational and experiential qualifications and examination results with the National Counseling Examination (NCE) . Individual states have responsibilities for the licensure of professional counselors. At this time counselor licensure is required in most states and the District of Columbia.

The curriculum of the School Counseling Program is aligned with the most recent CACREP standards (2001) and the standards set forth by the Indiana Professional Standards Board.  Upon graduation, school counseling students can immediately apply for state licensure.  Almost all school counseling students also take the National Counseling Examination (NCE) and become National Certified Counselors (NCC).
