The academic and professional progress of each student is reviewed at the end of each semester. Student progress in the following domains is evaluated: professional development, professional identity, professional relationships, professional and ethical behavior, interpersonal skills, counseling skills, academic work, awareness of limits of competence, understanding of core elements of school counseling, and research skills. Students are informed in writing by their advisors of the status of their progress. In most cases students receive a simple notice that their progress has been satisfactory. In cases of unsatisfactory progress, action is usually taken that is consistent with the Department Dismissal Policy (see Part II of this Handbook). Students are given the opportunity to improve areas of unsatisfactory performance before dismissal is considered.
