All students are required to complete the Plan of Study (Graduate School Form 6), see Appendix C) by the end of the first semester. The Plan of Study (POS) is a list of all courses that students will complete in their degree program. The advisor and two additional faculty members sign the POS. Traditionally one of these two is from the C & D faculty and the second is from outside of the C & D program, usually in the Department. These three faculty members constitute the Advisory Committee. The POS is first submitted to the Graduate Studies Office, where the Director of Graduate Studies checks it to be sure it fulfills the Departmental Foundations area requirement. The POS is then forwarded to the Purdue University Graduate School Office, where it is checked to be sure that it fulfills Graduate School requirements. The C & D master's program meets all Graduate School requirements. It is important that the course titles and numbers match transcript titles exactly.
When registering for the final semester, students indicate on the Form 23 course registration form that they will be a candidate for graduation in the following semester. This action places them on the College of Education graduation list. At the beginning of the next semester, the advisor requests an Appointment of Examining Committee (see Appendix D). This request triggers a Graduate School audit of the transcript against the POS. If all courses on the POS have been completed or are underway, the student is eligible for graduation following successful completion of all courses in the graduation semester. If actual course work has deviated from the POS, students must file a Graduate School Form 13 Request for Change to the Plan of Study (See Appendix E). The Purdue University Graduate School must approve this request before the student is eligible for graduation.
Students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher are not required to take a comprehensive exam. A final exam is administered to those students with cumulative grade point averages below 3.25. The final exam is written and evaluated by the members of the student's advisory committee. Students required to take a comprehensive exam must satisfactorily complete the exam in order to be eligible for graduation. Regardless of future plans, School Counseling graduates are strongly encouraged to begin the process of obtaining Indiana licensure prior to graduation.
