Master's students in the School Counseling program must earn grades of "B" or better in all core Counseling and Development courses. A complete list* of these courses is provided below. Grades of "C" or below in core courses are considered unsatisfactory and require that students retake the course.
1. If a grade of "C" or below is received in any core course (see below), the student must retake the course and earn a grade of "B" or better in order to complete the School Counseling program. No student is allowed to graduate without retaking the core course in which the grade of "C" or below was received and earning a grade of "B" or better.
2. If a grade of C or below is received in any core course, the student will not be able to continue in their field experiences (e.g., practicum and/or internship) during the following semester without the written permission of the school counseling faculty. This could mean delaying progress into field experiences for a year or more, depending on the course.
3. If a student receives two or more grades of C or below in core courses, that student will need to obtain written permission from the School Counseling faculty in order to continue in the program. Grades of C or below are unsatisfactory and may indicate serious academic, dispositional, or ethical deficiencies. If a student receives two or more grades of C or below for reasons of academic, dispositional, or ethical deficiencies, that student may be dismissed from the program.
4. If a student receives a grade of C or D in a field experience (e.g., practicum or internship), the student must repeat the course and receive a grade of "B" or better before receiving authorization to continue into subsequent field experiences. Grades of "C" or below in field experiences indicate that students have serious deficiencies that must be addressed before they can successfully complete the program. The student may be required by the faculty to undertake remedial or corrective action before she/he is permitted to enroll again in field experience coursework.
5. If a student receives a grade of F in a field experience, the student will not be able to re-enroll in field experience coursework without the written permission of the school counseling faculty. Grades of F are typically indicative of academic dishonesty, ethical violations, or severe dispositional concerns. If permission is not granted, forward movement in the program is likely stopped.
