Funding, Financial Assistance, Assistantships

Purdue University funding varies by category or type of funding.  Funding also varies within categories and may change from year to year.   Be aware that students are responsible for a basic fee per semester.  For tuition and fee rates visit:  http://www.admissions.purdue.edu/costs/tuitionfees.html.  Letters of appointment to assistantship or fellowship will detail the student's fees.  For specific funding visit: http://www.gradschool.purdue.edu/funding/

University Fellowships

A limited number of fellowships are available for students desiring to pursue full-time study.  They are awarded primarily to beginning graduate students of outstanding promise on the basis of a university-wide competition. Early application by January 1 is essential if the student wishes to be considered for a University Fellowship.

Graduate Opportunity Fellowships

Graduate Opportunity Fellowships are offered each year for U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are members of the following ethnic minority groups: African American, American Indian, Native Alaskan, Pacific Islander or Hispanic. Applicants must be admitted to the Graduate School prior to the nomination. Nominations to the Graduate School Fellowship committee are made in January of each year. Available on both the doctoral and master's levels.  

Residence Hall Counselorships

These positions provide an excellent opportunity for financial assistance for the unmarried beginning graduate student. Room, board, fee waiver and a monthly stipend are provided for counselors and staff residents. Detailed information and applications can be obtained from the Director, Residence Halls Administration, Smalley Center (765-494-1000).  Early application is essential.

Assistantships

A limited number of graduate assistantships are available within the Department of Educational Studies and elsewhere in the University each year. A half-time assistantship requires 20 hours per week of service and permits up to 12 hours of course work each semester.  Quarter-time assistantships require ten hours per week of service and permits the student to carry up to 15 semester hours of work per semester.  Quarter-time assistantships are unusual; the norm is the half-time assistantship.

Student Services Assistantships

This assignment employs the student for 20 hours per week as a half-time graduate assistant in one of the student services offices. The practical problems of admissions, registration, dean of students, financial aid, and placement add relevance to the academic course work. Teaching Undergraduate Courses

The Department of Educational Studies offers several undergraduate courses .  Graduate students with appropriate background are frequently hired as TAs and recitation leaders.  Further information can be obtained by contacting the Head of the Department of Educational Studies, (765) 494-9170.
