Academic Appeals Procedures

There are times when students think that instructor, advisor, or program requirements, evaluations, or decisions are unfair. We expect faculty members and students to act in good faith and in accordance with the principle of direct communication in order to resolve misunderstandings, disagreements, and grievances.

  • Students with concerns about any aspect of their courses are expected to communicate this feedback directly to their instructors. Counseling psychology faculty members are expected to be open and responsive to student feedback.
  • Students who are not satisfied after a discussion with a course instructor should next discuss the issue with the academic advisor. The advisor can provide information, perspective, guidance and problem-solving suggestions to students.
  • If students are not successful in resolving the problem following consultation with the advisor, they should meet with the Training Director.
  • If students remain unsatisfied following consultation with the Training Director, they should next consult the Head of the Department of Educational Studies. Be advised that the Head will ask you if you have first consulted with your course instructor, advisor, and Training Director.
  • Students are expected to follow this problem-solving sequence to resolve grievances with courses in counseling psychology or any other academic program or department. Failure to comply with this sequence is an indication of unprofessional behavior.
  • Course grades may be appealed through the College of Education Appeals Committee. For full details regarding grade appeal procedures, see the University Regulations: A Reference Book for Students, Staff, and Faculty Section E: Grade Appeals System. Copies of the University Regulations are available in the Department of Educational Studies and Graduate Studies Offices. Consult your advisors for the procedure for initiating an appeal. Be aware that grade appeals must be filed within 30 days of the onset of the next academic semester.
  • Students whose performance is judged as unsatisfactory in the annual student review have the right to appeal this decision to Counseling Psychology faculty.
  • Students who are not satisfied with the outcomes of appeals within the Counseling Psychology program have the right to appeal these decisions to the Head of the Department of Educational Studies.
